Preserve & Persist

How to prioritize self-care during harvest season abundance

Michelle Harrigan: A Meditation for Autumn

Take a deep breath in.
And let it go.

Feel the air of this season—
cooler, slower, carrying the scent of change.
Autumn reminds us that slowing down
is not a failure,
but a form of wisdom.

Look around—
the trees know how to do this.
They turn toward rest without apology.
They draw their brightness inward,
root-deep,
preserving what matters most.

You, too, can turn inward now.
You can honor what needs tending.
You can choose rest,
without guilt,
without rush.

As the days shorten,
find small ways to preserve your light—
a warm cup between your hands,
a slow walk through falling leaves,
a moment of stillness before the evening comes.

To persist is not to push.
It is to keep showing up for yourself
with gentleness.
It is to honor what sustains you—
your breath,
your body,
your quiet courage.

This season invites a soft strength.
Let go of what has served its time.
Keep only what nourishes.
Root down.
Rest deeply.

And trust—
that rest is not the end of growth,
but part of it.

Preserve your light.
Persist with care.
Even in the falling,
life continues to root and renew.

Take one more breath in.
And let it go.
You are enough.
You are becoming.
Still and strong, across every season.

Chat Highlights on Prioritizing Self-care

  • I feel like fall is a time for me to plant the seeds of change and/or resolutions (much more than Dec. 31/Jan. 1), then in the winter I grow the roots of those decisions. This might mean cleaning/purging/learning/developing. And then in spring I start seeing the benefit/growth of my decisions, and Summer I live in the abundance of them 🌷

  • Winter: tending, deepening, dreaming, remembering, breathing, pausing (some things); Spring: beginning, filling; Summer: fullness, expenditure, bigness, green; Fall: slowing, emptying, gathering, endings.

  • Falling leaves, snow diamonds, budding trees that look like a Bob Ross paining, tomatoes.

  • My husband heard on a podcast: "The cure for burnout isn't rest, it's play." I've been thinking about this a lot. I don't play enough.

  • Progress over perfection!

  • Play for me is doing any of my hobbies that I don’t have to do but am just doing out of pure enjoyment

Monthly Accountability Planning Sheets

As further support for the Women Farmers Aging Strong  Learning Circle Series and with a goal of collaboratively helping women prioritize that most important tool — ourselves — we created a free accountability template for anyone to print/download and use to set weekly goals and reflections for improving physical and mental health. These templates are customized with seasonal graphics, adding up to a year-long resource for personal planning, tracking and self-learning.
